Welcome to the Resource Page for

APPLIED COMPOSITION

with Dr. Scott Watson

“The happiest genius will hardly succeed by nature and instinct alone in rising to the sublime. Art is art; he who has not thought it out has no right to call himself an artist. Here all groping in the dark is vain; before a man can produce anything great, he must understand the means by which he is to produce it.”
~ Johann Goethe

A typical class meeting involves:
1) Listening and/or Score Analysis - What can music of lasting worth teach us?
2) Discussion/Explanation of Relevant Topic - Orchestration, instrument transpositions, note collections, compositional device, etc. May involve podcast or slide show.
3) Examination/discussion of Student's Music - What sort of project would be profitable and appropriate to undertake? What have you been writing; present/explain? Where might you go from here? Do you have a sense of the whole piece yet?
4) Practical Stuff - Schedule future meetings, notation software questions, questions, etc.
